WHAT TO EXPECT
Thank you for you interest in Free Border Skate and our efforts to make an impact in the lives of children across the globe through our shared passion of rollerskating. Below you will find an overview of what to expect from your week with us in Nicaragua.
Each morning, you will have the opportunity to join classes taught by one of our professional skate instructors. Classes will vary as will instructors and will range from jam, artistic, rhythm and park. After classes end, you’ll be free to enjoy the resorts pool, lounge area, volleyball courts, rock climbing wall, gym or make your way into town to explore the city and beaches. If you have signed up to volunteer that day, you’ll be expected back to the ranch in time to prepare for the children to arrive. Once they arrive you will assist in gearing them up and teaching with your lead coach. You and your lead coach will work for 90 minutes each day with your assigned small group. Groups as well as volunteers will be divided based on abilities. During the week, you'll be invited to join a cultural trip; a 2 hour long surfing lesson with one of San Juans most talented surfers.
How you’ll contribute: Each one teach one. At FBS our goal is to use sports as a form of confidence and community building. By improving your skills, you are then able to pass that knowledge on to new communities and generations who may not be exposed to roller skating. We are visitors. This means what we create is not for us but for the community. In everything we do, our goal is sustainability, ensuring we leave each community with the tools and resources to continue long after we’re gone. In practice that means providing quality teaching to our local instructor as well as a global community they can rely on going forward. Our commitment doesn't end when we go home. We also ask that you bring quality donations that will last allowing our beneficearies to level up and engage in the sport we all love on equal footing. Transparency is key: This retreat is a social enterprise, meaning it's collaborative effort between a non-profit and for profit business. What that means is a portion of our profits (exactly 50%) go to making sure FBS can continue its operations, while the other 40% go towards paying coaches and staff to make sure the experience for participants is worth the investment. FBS however will alway be free for the children participating in our program. For those who have already committed to volunteering with FBS, we will be taking application and interviewing assistant coaches, which are individuals with teaching experience who would like to lead our daily small groups. Coaches will be required to arrive two days prior to the start of the retreat and will be housed in a seaside villa with FBS management. We will only consider assistant coaches once you have met 75% of your fundraising goal. We are on the look out for three assistant coaches in total. Coaches are the backbone of FBS as they not only lead our participants during our sessions, they also help up-skill our local coaches who leads our local chapter in the absence of our international volunteers. This way of working ensures our program is not only sustainable but also advancing.
