There are moments in life when you feel a calling so strong that you can’t ignore it. For me, that moment came during a cold winter evening in Daan and I, small apartment, bundled up in a thick blanket -truly miserable. I was scrolling through photos from my recent travels, daydreaming about warmer places, while Daan was begging me to come to bed. I was caught in a day dream- when all of a sudden a notification popped up on my phone: “Nicaragua: A Hidden Gem for Adventure Seekers.”
I clicked on the link and was instantly captivated. The stunning beaches of San Juan del Sur, the vibrant culture, and the promise of endless adventures spoke to my soul. At 33, I felt like I was going to be stuck in this routine that wasn’t fulfilling - forever. My books were doing well, my friends were great, but something was missing. I craved more meaning, more connection, more... life. That night, I couldn't sleep. I kept imagining myself skating along the beautiful coastlines, soaking up the sun, and immersing myself in a community that embraced the simple joys of life. By morning, I knew what I had to do.
The decision to move to Nicaragua didn’t come without its challenges. I had to convince my husband why leaving a perfectly good life in London was a good idea. Of course there were countless questions: “Why Nicaragua?” “Is it safe?” “What will we do there?” But the more I explained my vision, the more he realized how much we needed this change. So we took the leap of faith and trusted that working remote for Daan would work out, while following my passion for skating and adventure would lead me to where I was meant to be.
Once we arrived in San Juan del Sur, everything felt right. The locals were welcoming, the scenery was breathtaking, and the sense of community was palpable. I started hosting roller skating rooftop sessions, blending my love for skating with the beauty of Nicaragua. It was a dream come true to see women from the community take part in something I loved. Not long after that, I asked one of my best friends Morgan if we should host a retreat, and bring women from over the world, to come together, bond over shared experiences, and embrace the vibrant Nicaraguan culture. She said yes immediately and the rest is history.
One of the highlights of our retreats is our cliffside dinner at the stunning restaurant HUSH. Watching the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen, we share a meal that captures the essence of Nicaragua. The breathtaking views of San Juan del Sur provide the perfect backdrop as we enjoy delicious local dishes. This experience goes beyond just enjoying a meal; it’s about connecting with new friends, soaking in the beauty of Nicaragua, and creating unforgettable memories. This magical evening at HUSH is a reminder of why I made this bold move. It’s not just about skating; it’s about creating experiences that bring people together and build a community that feels like family.
Every day, I wake up grateful for the courage to follow my heart. Moving to Nicaragua wasn’t just a change of scenery; it was a transformation of my life. I found purpose, joy, and a sense of belonging that I never knew I was missing. If you’ve ever felt that tug on your heart, that whisper telling you there’s more out there, listen to it. Take the leap. You never know where it might lead you.
